Module 5 will focus on two special categories of myth: those about tricksters and those involving sacred space or sacred objects.

Tricksters

Perhaps the most popular myths are those that involve tricksters, figures of play who represent the best and worst traits of humankind. Tricksters are not only common in our myths, but they are common figures in all kinds of literature from cartoons and comic books to classic works of literature. In Module 5, we will examine some of the traits of the trickster as well as some trickster myths in order to better understand the continued fascination these characters hold.

Sacred Space

Certain places and objects have about them an atmosphere of presence that creates in us an attitude of reverence and respect. We may not use the term sacred when thinking about them, but the word sacred does describe how we feel when we enter those places or touch those objects. These places and objects take on a significance that is far beyond their actual presence. Christians visiting the Holy Land feel a sense of connection to their beliefs as they "walk where Jesus walked." Despite the cynicism that often pervades modern life, the sight of the American flag flying, especially during times of national mourning, may bring tears to the eyes or a lump in the throat.

In Module 5, we will be examining the nature of the sacred. What is it that makes some places or some things seem special?
