"The Deluge", Frontispiece to Doré's illustrated edition of the Bible. Available from Wikipedia. Based on the story of Noah's Ark, this shows humans and a tiger doomed by the flood futilely attempting to save their children and cubs. This black and white drawing shows a stormy sea, the sky dark, with eight seagulls flying. A large rock outcropping juts out of the rough sea. At the peak of the rock, a tiger sits, one cub in her jaws, two more cubs nestled between her front legs. Beside the tiger are four naked children. The oldest sits looking down, his hand on his head. One of the younger children reaches down to his naked father, who is reaching up to him. The father is clinging to the arm of his naked wife. To the left of the rock a pair of arms are upstretched attempting to cling to the rock. A third hand barely emerges from the rough sea. To the right is a smaller rock, the upper torso of a naked figure lying on it. It is unclear if this person is alive.
