Battle of Gettysburg. Lithograph by L. Prang & Co., 1887. LC-USZC4-1178. Library of Congress In the left foreground a row of Union soldiers kneel, loading or firing their rifles. In the center foreground, an officer on a dark horse is leading a charge. Behind him can be seen other soldiers on horseback. To the officers right, other soldiers on horseback advance toward the troops, including a wagon carrying a cannon. The right rear wheel of the wagon has just struck a rock, snapping the axle from the wagon. To the right of the wagon, a soldier lies on his back, head lifted, watching the wagon. To his right lie a dead horse with his rider. At the far right is another wagon, one wheel having fallen off the axle, a dead horse beside the wagon. In the near background is a line of Confederate soldiers, some firing rifles, others working cannon. There is a haze of gunsmoke floating over the Confederate lines. In the distance can be seen other palls of smoke indicating various smaller skirmishes.
