The painting shows the Red Horseman, a soldier carrying a flaming sword and riding a chestnut horse through a forest of beech and elm trees.  The horseman carries a long oval red sheild with a sunburst that has eyes and mouth above three chevrons.

The soldier has the same sunburst face on his chest.  He wears red gloves and a brown cloak.  Red laced boots cover his feet to the knee.  On his head, he wears a red helmet with ear flaps.
