Theater of Dionysus, Athens, Greece. Photo by De'Lara Stephens, March 2006 The picture is taken from the hill above looking down into the bowl shaped theater. The theater is seen as a half circle. The outer sides of the circle are made up of rows of stone seats with walkways (aisles) between the rows. The upper sides of the theatre are overgrown with vegetation. Several tourists can be seen walking down the Below the seating area is a narrow walkway bordered by a low wall. This is the orchetra or "dancing place" where a group of young men would dance and chant comments to the audience. On the other side of the wall is the raised semicircular stage, all open. Along the back of the stage are the remains of the small building where actors could rest or dress for the next scene. The collonade of roofed pillars behind the stage are no longer in evidence. Beyond the stage is a walkway lined with short stones and a row of cedar.
